Vashti Mahabeer, 85, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, died on May 14, 2020. Vashti is the daughter of James and Edna Mahabeer. She was born on August 20, 1934, at Geddes Town, St. Mary, Jamaica.
Vashti went to school at Free Hill Primary where later went in the trade of hairdressing. She also attended cooking school and later pursued a course in key punch operating. In the early 1950s, Vashti won a "spot prize" for the Jamaica Beauty Pageant. She was a favourite but had to withdraw at the crowning night due to father's disapproval.
Vashti travelled to the UK in the early 1960s where she gave birth to her daughter (Maudre Mahbier). She resided in England for 10 years and was also trained as a First Aid Medic trainee. Vashti moved back to Jamaica to be with her parents and later travelled to the United States where she finally settled in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
She enjoyed cooking for friends and family. Vashti is survived by: Maudre Mahbier (daughter), Sakina (grand-daughter), and Westley (son-in-law). Nephews: Lennie, Tazy, Colin and Leroy. Nieces: Lissa and Cheryl. Close friends: Stacey Alves and Sandra Dugan. And so many more.
