Avis Wray-Hughes was the first of 10 children born to Ursula and Sylvester Wray on June 18, 1925 (recorded August 25, 1925) in Aboukir, St. Ann the beautiful garden Parish in Jamaica. She was affectionately known as Sister Avis by her siblings and the entire district. After finishing school, she moved to Frankfield, Clarendon to work as a Pharmacist Assistant, where she had her first son Ronald Jackson Sr. Her decision to move to Spanish Town, St. Catherine was a life changer because that is where she met and married Wesley Hughes Sr. Three more children expanded the family, Dorriel (aka Pam), Wesley Jr. and Claudette (aka Fay).
Avis and Wesley settled with their family in Annotto Bay, St. Mary and she became a very active member of the Annotto Bay Baptist Church. She was employed at Gibson’s Fabric store. During her residency in Annotto Bay she developed many friendships that lasted a lifetime.
In 1968, Avis migrated to the United States where she settled in Bronx, New York. She attended school where she trained to become a Certified Nursing Assistant. She went on to work for The Jewish Home for the Aged where she was employed for 18 years until her early retirement. In 1987 when Avis retired she moved to live with her daughter Claudette in North Miami Beach, Florida. She attended First Baptist Church of North Miami Beach and encouraged her grandchildren to fellowship with her. The teachings they received as a result helped to strengthen their faith in God and is still evident in their lives.
In 1991, she moved back to Jamaica and enjoyed many happy years with wonderful neighbors on Dyna Ave in Meadowbrook Estate. Avis hosted her grandchildren during their Summer vacations and that was some of the most cherished memories that they share with their children even now. Everyone who knew her can attest to her unwavering faith in God. She always showed concern for others and was an inspiration to many. Her health was failing but she never lost the will to live. She spent her last years living with her daughter Claudette and son in law Clement in Pembroke Pines, Florida, where she was well taken care of. Unable to attend congregational worship service, she found solace in studying her Bible and listening to Gospel music.
In the months prior to her death, she would have the pleasure of spending precious moments with her son Wesley Jr., her baby brother Keith and his wife Gean, her daughter in law Olive, grandchildren and great grandchildren and a plethora of other family and friends.
When Avis took her last breath on March 30, 2017, she was surrounded by her loving family.
